The Birth of Urbantopia
Despite the fact that our multi-cultural, multi-ethnic society is growing, it has been and still is well documented that there is an enormous gap in the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) readers and writers sector
Sadly, recent research by The Reading Agency ( TRA )and Harper Collins found that many BME parents are buying less books for their children and therefore creating a generation of children who lack attachment and appreciation for books.
Research shows there is a great demand from BME for children’s books.
Whilst recently reading an article on Booksellers.com, I found myself captivated by a quote by Amanda Ridout, m.d HaperCollins. She stated:
“The recent findings are a major cry out to the publishing industry to address the lack of diversity and representation.” More importantly, she finished off by stating
“WE NEED TO SOURCE AND ENCOURAGE NEW VOICES.”
And thus, this has formed the basis of Urbantopia.
